The Ruins of Miki Castle |

Miki Castle used to be the residential castle of Shugodai Lord Bessho, who ruled East Harima during the Sengoku Period. It is also the place where the famous Miki Gassen (the Battle of Miki), fight between Hashiba Hideyoshi and the Bessho clan took place, and it is now loved by the local residents as the Uenomaru Park. The area stretches 600 meters from east to west and 700 meters from north to south, and includes many interesting places to visit, including the ruins of the honmaru (castle core) and ni-no-maru (the second area) where the Miki History Resources Center is located. Other sites include Unryu-ji Temple, which has the grave of Bessho Nagaharu and his wife who were defeated in the Miki Gassen; the ruins of the "new castle" near the city hall; and the Takao-san Castle ruins. On May 5, the area holds the Spring Festival of Bessho Nagaharu, where you can see the samurai procession with a parade of people in traditional clothing and samurai armor.
At the honmaru ruins which are open all year round, you can see remains of a well and mounds that are said to have belonged to a tenshudai (castle keep base). Near the tenshudai is the final poem read by Nagaharu before he committed seppuku (honourable suicide) to protect his retainers and others under his dominion, carved into a stone monument.
At the Miki History Resource Center many historical references are exhibited, including 2.5 m x 1.5 m replicas of war paintings used to pass down knowledge of the battle.
At the Takao-san Castle ruins, you can absorb the atmosphere of the Sengoku Period of hundreds of years ago that is created by hints of history such as walls and earthworks from the period. Even the road between the honmaru and ni-no-maru is said to have been used as a trench that protected the castle long ago.
